It's the most wonderful time of the year!

We got back on Friday from our wonderful visit home to Wisconsin! I'm so thankful that we got to see so much family and friends! Our first married Christmas:)

The drive home to Wisconsin, as always, took forever (ie 13 hours) but once we got out of the car and into the house, all of that was forgotten. I always dread the drive but the minute that we get home (either home) I forget about the drive and am just happy to be where we are.

Saturday December 21 Matthew and I had a couple's massage, my Christmas gift to him. It was an amazing experience and I recommend Body Focus to anyone in the Eau Claire area. Thanks to my dear friend Emma for the suggestion in the first place. Probably the most relaxing hour we've had together in a long time.  In the evening we went with my parents the annual Nightcrawlers' Christmas party where we were greeted with open arms and warm smiles. It was great seeing all of them and celebrating with them. Troy passed away last November and this was the first time I was around all of the Nightcrawlers for an extended amount of time and really, really noticed that he was missing. Lots of love to Mari and Angie! Troy was an amazing man!

Sunday December 23 we packed up Henry Honda and traveled to Bird Island, MN to celebrate with the extended Beckler  and McNamara clan's. What a blast! All of the Becklers, except cousin Ashley (who is currently in Malaysia doing mission work), ate a meal together. Grandma Beckler said it's the first time that has happened in a long time. Delicious food, great company and wonderful family.

Christmas Eve we drove back to EC and I went out to my parents house to see Jake, Kayla and the getting cuter every day nephew Rowan! What a wonderful thing to spend so much time with him. Christmas Eve was dinner and gifts and falling asleep to Miracle on 34th Street at Matthew's parents house.

Christmas Day we had brunch at the Beckler's and headed out to my parents. We opened gifts, ate a delicious meal, played Cards Against Humanity, watched Rowan sit, giggle, drool, roll over (basically just stared at him because he's so cute). Holidays are different with a baby in the house! It was great having Jake and Kayla home for Christmas! We've really missed them the past few years:) One of the highlights of Christmas was bundling Rowan up and taking him outside for a ride in the sled my parents have had since I was born (a gift from Grandma Kate). There are pictures with me and Jake in the sled at varying ages and it was super sweet to put Rowan in there all snuggled up. He was really tired at that point so I'm glad he was such a trooper.

Boxing Day meant saying goodbye to Jake and Kayla as they headed back to Madison. I went to the dentist for a cleaning (my first one since April 2009, I'm pretty sure) and since no one else was around and I really wanted to see it before it left the theatre, I went to see Breaking Dawn Part 2 by myself! I felt surprisingly empowered to go to the movies by myself.  Wednesday night, I had dinner with my awesome EC girls at Stella Blues (YUM) and went back to Emma's newly remodeled house complete with an adorable dog to chit chat and play cards. I guess we're all getting older because Emma kicked us out by 9:30 and I was home and asleep by 10:30. It was great to see all of them and catch up. I really hope we'll get to move to the Twin Cities when Matthew's done with school and I'll be able to see them more often.

Our last full day in EC, we slept it! I went for a snowshoe with my dad in the woods which was delightful. I really love being at home (though if you know me, that's no surprised); just the quiet, snow, sun  and general comfort of being around familiar things. After we packed up all of our stuff (and the car) we headed back into town where I dropped Matthew off and headed BACK to the dentist. For a girl who hadn't been there in 3.5 years, two days in a row was a change. I chipped my tooth the week before Christmas so I had to have that filled in and the dentist said he might as well fix the cavity I had while he was already in there. I left with a numb cheek and 1/4 of a fake tooth and stopped by Siri's house for a quick visit on my way to Matthew's for dinner. After dinner we took Carter for a walk and I went to see Les Miserables with Nicole. I really enjoyed the film; Anne Hathaway was surprisingly excellent  and I LOVED Aaron Tveit as Enjolras! Who knew Tripp (from Gossip Girl) could sing!? He blew me away. Amanda Seigfried as Cosette left a LOT to be desired. Overall, I'm going to see it again and Matthew sounds interested in going too:)

Friday we drove and drove and drove and drove. Friday night we got home and slept and slept and slept.

I had a GREAT time at home!! Loved every minute of it:) Thanks to all of our friends and family who made our first married Christmas a very special one!

20 days...

until Christmas! T-Minus 16 days until we head home! I can't wait to be in Wisconsin celebrating with my friends and family! Hooray! Let's hope there's some snow!

It was 65 degrees and rainy here yesterday. Not entirely weather to get you into the holiday spirit but I'm managing. I've got all my gifts wrapped and the ornaments on the tree and the few decorations we have are up. The kitties are obsessed with trying to knock the tree over so I'm hoping that it'll last for the next few weeks. It was standing this morning when we woke up, so here's hoping.

I have had a super productive two days! Monday I stayed home, cleaned the apartment (except the bathroom--Matthew said he's going to do it on the weekend) put up the Christmas tree and went to after-school. We didn't go to band and to be honest, it was really nice. Mondays are a long day when I'm basically gone from 6:30/7am until 10pm at night.

Yesterday I powered through some trainings for work and got a ton of paperwork done. It's stuff that I've been putting off for ages and it felt really good to have it all finished! The last of the gifts I ordered for Christmas arrived yesterday so I wrapped presents, did some paperwork and watched The Holiday. Such a cute movie. Also talked to the lovely Jessi:)

Matthew's been super busy at work. He had a project due last night, a test tomorrow and he wants to send his proposal out on Friday. Cross your fingers that he can get everything done this week (and manage to find time to get some sleep too).

Right now Ellie is purring and snuggling in my lap. What a life I lead:)

Thanksgiving weekend

Thanksgiving weekend has been wonderful! Matthew and I cooked our very own teeny tiny turkey on Thursday and made lots of delicious sides! I'm so proud of us for making all of our own food and for sticking to eating leftovers since then.

I worked Black Friday and Saturday and had no issues. No one yelled at me and no one was super rude. Thank goodness!  Matthew and I did a little shopping on Friday and spent the rest of the evening at home relaxing. Saturday I worked until 3pm, came home and watched movies/wrapped Christmas presents for the rest of the evening.

Today has been super productive!! I work tonight but feel good going in because I got so much done today.

Other than working, not much is happening here. I'm thankful for that:) It's nice being home more than one weekend at a time. I'm so much more productive! I have tomorrow off from school too! Just having a staff meeting in the evening and then onward to concert band practice! Should be an awesome night!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I've been everywhere, man...

We’ve been traveling like crazy since the start of September and the inbetween travel time is busy with work and school and trying to enjoy being married.

Hawaii was wonderful! It was sunny, warm and made me realize that we need to take a vacation every year. Perhaps not one of the magnitude or distance of Hawaii, but take a trip, just the two of us to somewhere we haven’t been before. It was wonderful to explore Hawaii and be on our own schedule. Don’t get me wrong, I love going home or traveling for weddings but it was really nice not to be working around other people’s schedules and being busy every minute of every day; unless we wanted to. We ate pineapple, swam and kayaked in the ocean, hiked Diamond Head, went to the Polynesian Cultural Center and had a few relaxing afternoons by the pool with good books.
Waikiki Beach

Sunset walk in our Hawaiian best!
Thanks to my awesome friend Brea, Matthew and I got to go to a Packer game at Lambeau Field! Now I’ve been a Packer fan since I was 8 or 9 years old and have always wanted to visit the holy land that is Green Bay, Wisconsin. I’m so thankful that Brea (and her family’s  willingness to share their tickets) could make it happen. It was wonderful to be going to an away game (since we don’t live in Green Bay or even Wisconsin) but being a fan of the home team. Not to mention that the Packers won! Unlike EVERY time we’ve seen the Gophers on the road. An extra bonus was that my brother came over from Madison for the weekend so we got to see Rowan (who is growing up waaaay too fast), Jake and Kayla.  We also got to meet Kayla’s parents, who graciously let us stay with them. Hopefully we didn’t scare them off too much.

Lambeau Field! So excited!
Matthew had a conference  in Ananheim, CA (home of Disneyland in case you didn’t know) and I decided to tag along. It was a wonderful week. The Disneyland Hotel was great! It was convenient to everything, including a bus line for me to take an adventure. Matthew had to dress up, schmooze with the Test community big wigs while I got to lounge by the pool, sleep late, watch bad TV and spend time with my lovely friend Brea. Things worked out pretty well! On Tuesday, I had a relaxing morning watching tv and reading. In the afternoon, I took the bus to Muzeo to see the exhibits there. Their website was misleading (I thought there would be three  exhibits, there was only one open) but I enjoyed seeing the artwork of Dali, Picasso and Goya. After Muzeo, I took the bus into Downtown Fullerton, CA. I walked around until I found a cute little cafĂ©, got a flat bread sandwich/pizza, and sat outside to relax and read. It was a wonderful adventure and reminded me how much I like doing my own thing sometimes. It was liberating and exciting.  Matthew and I just hung out Tuesday night since he was working on a project for school and working on his presentation for Wednesday. On Wednesday, I took a swim in the pool and laid out for a little bit, got dressed and packed my bag for my trip to Palm Springs, CA! Brea and Kee picked me up and we headed into LA to see the sites. Kee grew up in Hollywood Hills and Sherman Oaks so he was an excellent tour guide. We ate a delicious dinner in a Korean neighborhood and then headed back to Palm Springs. On Thursday, Brea and I got up and went to the Palm Springs Ariel Tramway. The top was a breathtaking view of Palm Springs and the neighboring cities. It was a little chilly up there, which made both of us think about fall in Wisconsin. We came down from the top of the mountain, picked up Kee, grabbed lunch at Santana’s (think Mom&Pop type Mexican restaurant but it’s open 24 hours and has a drive-thru) and drove into Anaheim. Thursday night we went to In-N-Out Burger for dinner which was DELICIOUS. We walked around Downtown Disney and enjoyed looking at all the cute Disney stuff. After our walk, we foolishly thought it would be fun (or warm enough?) to take a swim in the outdoor pool. We swam about 20 minutes before we turned into icicles and went back into the hotel put on jammies and went to sleep.
Brea and I after our DELICIOUS Korean food!
It was a fantastic week. I loved being somewhere new and different but it’s going to be a welcome change to be back in Pittsburgh for more than one weekend at a time. We’re done being jetsetters for the time being. No more airplane travel for the rest of 2012; just driving home for Christmas in December! Woohoo! I’m excited to see my parents, drive around EC and see my lovely friends!

Congratulations

Sorry for the belated posts! I've been traveling a lot and been super busy with work.

Congratulations to my brother and his girlfriend Kayla on their engagement! I can’t wait to help them celebrate their commitment to each other on October 5, 2013!! I’m also super excited to finally have a sister!

Congratulations to my cousin Meg and her husband Mike on the arrival of their healthy baby girl on November 3rd. Cecilia Grace is healthy and happy and is apparently (according to facebook) sleeping tons! Congratulations to the Hattons

Congratulations to my dear friend Nicole on having her thesis accepted. She is cleared to receive her Masters in Library and Information Science from UW-M! Hooray Nicole! I’m so proud of you!!

A great BIG congratulations to our friends Eric and Robin on FINALLY (and I mean that in a nice way) getting engaged! I’m so happy for the two of them and am really excited for their wedding! It should be a great big party!

T-Minus 6 days

We leave for Hawaii on Saturday!! I can't wait to be on vacation! Hopefully the weather is gorgeous and we have tons of fun. I know that I want to go snorkling, see Pearl Harbor, hike Diamond's Head and eat dinner on the beach at sunset/evening. And of course, go swimming in the ocean!  It's the first vacation that Matthew and I have taken together that isn't for a family function, wedding or going home to EC. So basically, our first vacation together.

Hopefully this week flies by:)

Congratulations Meg and David!

Watching Meg come up the aisle. So pretty!
                                       Myself and the beautiful bride!
                                         Monday Night Beer Club crew
                                     Congratulations Meg and David!

I'm so happy to have been able to share in your special day! It was a truly beautiful day and you two deserve all the happiness in the world!

A great loss

My best friend Emma's mom passed away on the morning of Saturday September 8th. This past weekend I went home for the visitation and memorial service. I've know Dianne for as long as I can remember; she's my second mom. At the memorial service people were invited to get up and share memories of Dianne. Hearing people's stories and memories made me realize how little I actually knew about Dianne. Her work life, her life in Ohio remain a mystery to me. One thing I did notice was all of the people present had been touched by this wonderful woman. She was always caring, always supportive, always believed in people no matter what the situation, and was passionate about everything she did (even having cancer)!

I wanted to get up and speak at the memorial service but I didn't know where to start. I've known Dianne for 25 years and shared numerous holidays, birthdays and other important events with Emma, Sally, Bruce and Dianne. I just didn't know where to begin. We lived far away from our extended family and so we always celebrated holidays together. Usually Thanksgiving and Easter. It was wonderful to have a slice of family in Eau Claire since most of my extended family lives in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. I don't always remember specifics about those holidays but I do remember they were always full of music, delicious homemade food and  laughter.

Dianne's life may be over, but her memory will last forever. I'm proud to know her and have been part of her and her family's life for all of these years! Rest easy, Dianne. I love you!

Travelin'

On Thursday, Matthew and I are off to Minnesota to celebrate our friends Meg and David's wedding! I'm in the wedding and Matthew is using his downtime in the Twin Cities to do some Wayne and Layne work. We are packing in a lot into our four day trip. Thursday afternoon we arrive and my friend Vanessa is picking us up at the airport. Friday I'm relaxing all day, getting my nails done and going out to dinner with bandos (Matthew will be working all day). Saturday is the wedding! Sunday we are having breakfast/lunch with both sets of parents before we fly back. The four days are going to fly but I'm so excited to be in Minnesota for a few days!

In early October we are going to Hawaii for a week for our honeymoon!

At the end of October, we're going to Green Bay for the weekend for a Packer game. The tickets were a wedding gift from my friend Brea, who understands my love for the Pack. We also get to see Jake, Kayla and Rowan while we are in town! Double YAY!

In November, Matthew is presenting at a conference in California and so I've decided to tag along too! Hopefully I can keep myself entertained:) It should be a blast, especially since I haven't ever been to California.

So, the next few months are crazy busy with travelling. I'm excited to be going so many places and seeing new things! What a wonderful way to spend fall:)

Rowan

While we were home in Wisconsin for the wedding, Auntie Anna and Uncle Matthew got to meet our nephew Rowan! The photos I took of him at the end of July don't even do him justice now since he's grown so much! The one above is from July 21
And this one is from August 27! He's getting so big. I regret living so far away because I'm missing out on so much of him growing up. Thankfully my brother sends me pictures about once a week:)  I'm so in love him Rowan, from the first minute Jake called and told me he was born!

Wedding Photos

Sorry blog readers for the lack of updates over the last two months. Summer always gets away from me because summer camp consumes my life. Now that I'm in my second summer camp-free week, I've got a little more time on my hands to do a life update.

We got married on July 28. It was the perfect day! It still blows my mind when I think about all of our friends and family who travelled from near and far to celebrate our wedding day with us. My cousin Carlos came all the way from Mexico!
Here I am walking up the aisle with my parents.
Matthew and I after the ceremony.

I had an absolute blast! Our wedding party was amazing and everyone said that the reception was one of the best they'd been too. Thank you to all of our family and friends who came! It was wonderful to see you all!

Baby Nephew

Jake and Kayla had their baby yesterday!! Rowan Patrick Johnson was born 9:14pm on June 9 at 8lbs 2oz!! Everyone is healthy and happy! My parents are heading down to Madison today to meet Rowan (their first grandbaby)! I'm so jealous! I wish I lived closer right now so that we could all be together....Flights are only $350...hmmm:)

One Day More

Summer Camp stars on Monday. I have moved all of the stuff from Sunnyside. All of the paperwork is ready. We have kids enrolled. I have spent this week getting things ready for next week. I'm intending to spend tomorrow afternoon(ish) at the church unpacking and setting things up. We're in such a better place than we were last year...300 times better!

I'm confident about the staff I've hired and am excited about all the new campers we're getting this summer! It's a year for change and I intend to lead with courage and enthusiasm and positivity!!

Ms. Anna returns for another summer:)

Summer Camp

I had training with my new summer camp staff this past week. I'm excited about them! Camp starts in about a week (June 11, eek!) so this upcoming week is pretty much balls to the wall to get things finalized and organized!! I'm feeling 100 times better about camp and the camp staff this year than I did at the start of last summer. This year's staff have been trained, have all their paperwork in and really seem excited about their jobs! Hooray!

Yard Sale-ing

Today our neighborhood had a HUGE yard sale! I think the email said about 140 houses/yards participated! Matthew and I walked around and got a few things.

Four ceramic jars (with lids and spoons) to store flour, dry baking items, cereal etc), 5 books, three small bowls, three records on vinyl, and a cheesehead (think Packer fanatics cheesehead for about $25.  It was a great day! I liked walking around our neighborhood, seeing people out and about and just enjoying a sunny, cool day in Pittsburgh. I hope that our next place is in a wonderful neighborhood like Highland Park!

This afternoon has consisted of cleaning up the apartment and doing some wedding stuff (ie paying bills). I'm feeling super productive!

Summer time...

and the livin' is easy:)

We are in full summer mode here in Pittsburgh! The pool at our apartment complex has been open for over a week! We swam yesterday and today! On our way back from CMU, we stopped and bought lemonade from some kids selling glasses for 50cents in front of their house. Dream come true right there! I always wish that Jake and I could have had a lemonade stand at our house but country roads are not a great place to start a small business:) After I swam today I did stuff around the apartment in my damp suit to maintain coolness. I have also had two Leinie's Summer Shandy's! Sounds like summer to me! Matthew is grilling Cheddarwursts as I type this. Man, do I love summer!!

I'm training my new summer staff starting on Wednesday. Summer Camp starts June 11. That's when my life gets crazy busy but as much as I complain about it, I do truly love my job and all the kids that I work with. I can't wait to see who is coming back this summer!! Mr. Mike is no longer with the YMCA and I know a lot of kids are going to be super sad about that (including this girl)!

Our trip home to EC was fantastic! I'm still impressed how much we did in just four days at home. Friday we had meetings with the reception place and the DJ. Friday afternoon until Saturday morning I went to Onalaska to see my lovely Emily. Saturday afternoon we packed invitations. Saturday night I had dinner and went to the movies with Nicole and Emma. Sunday we drove to MN for a bridal shower with Matthew's family. Monday morning I dropped the invitations into the mail slot. Matthew and I had a meeting with our cake baker and the minister at the church. Monday night I had dinner with Rachel in Chippewa and then came home to pack to leave on Tuesday. It was a whirl-wind trip but I'm so glad we were able to come home and see so many friends and family!

I'm excited to have another day off tomorrow. It'll be nice to sleep in and get some stuff done around the house! So enjoy yourself, it's summertime after all and the livin is easy:)

100 years

Over the weekend Matthew and I traveled to Connecticut to celebrate my grandma's husband's 100th birthday! He was born two weeks after the Titanic sunk! Doesn't that put life into perspective! He's a wonderful man and I felt so honored to be part of the celebration!
Family picture! After our trip to East Haven, CT, we went to Scranton, PA (to quote a "rap" video from The Office "Scranton! What! It's the ELECTRIC CITY!"). My dad went to college at the University of Scranton so we walked around. We also went to the Steamtown mall which was sadly disappointing. However, we had a nice little stop over on our long trip back from Connecticut.
Overall a fantastic weekend! This Saturday I'm going to Columbus for the day to meet up with my cousins Lauren and Maureen!! We're going to the zoo and I can't wait!

Bridal Shower

On Saturday, three of my aunts (my mom's sisters) hosted a bridal shower for me! It was wonderful! I got to see aunts and cousins and friends! I felt so loved by everyone in the room. We had a beautiful afternoon eating delicious food, sharing stories and laughing. I loved every minute of it. My dearest Emily came from Wisconsin and Jessi traveled with me from Pittsburgh. Emily said that after the weekend she really felt like part of the family. It was wonderful to get out of Pittsburgh and hang out in South Bend for a few days. I am so thankful that I have such a wonderful and generous family

This weekend, Matthew and I are hitting the road and traveling to Connecticut for Nile's (my grandma's husband) 100th birthday party! I can't believe that he's 100! It's just awesome!! I wouldn't have missed it for anything in the world!

Here's to a busy next few weekends:)

Wedding Progress

Matthew and I have been proactive in terms of getting our wedding stuff taken care of. I picked up our wedding bands yesterday. Our invitations are in the box just waiting to be assembled and sent out. We have our customized Chuck Taylors. My friend Mike commented to me on Friday that he is surprised that I'm not a bridezilla since I'm usually so anal about things in daily life. I figure it's a day to celebrate love and commitment with family and friends and if things go wrong, they go wrong. No big deal:)

B-E-A-Utiful!

The weather has been unseasonably wonderful! No rain, just sunshine and highs in the 70s! I feel so motivated to get stuff done around the apartment! It's also pretty fortunate that the weather got really nice after daylight savings time so everyone has an extra hour of light at the end of the work day in which to enjoy being outside! It just feels like everyone is in a better mood because of the nice weather. Since Pittsburgh isn't Wisconsin, I'm assuming that it isn't going to snow one more time, like it would in Wisconsin (ie the years where there was snow at Prom in April and when it snowed at UMD in May).

Taxes

I filed my taxes tonight:) It's always a satisfying feeling! I'm thankful my dad taught me how to do my taxes when I had my first job. Filing only one W-2 is MUCH easier than filing six (like I did this year)!

I can't believe that it's already February 20th!! This month is flying by! March and April are already pretty busy, we're going home to EC in May and then summer camp starts! I can't believe we're getting married in a little over five months!!

Invitations

Today I ordered our wedding invitations! July 28 is coming up so fast! I know we can get everything done but once summer camps starts I will have significantly less time to work on stuff:)

Speaking of weddings, last weekend I went home to Minnesota and went wedding dress shopping with my lovely friend Meg! She found THE dress and looks absolutely gorgeous! I'm so thankful to have been part of her shopping trip and to stand up with her at her wedding in September!

Oddly enough Matthew is going to Minnesota this weekend to work with Adam on some stuff for Wayne&Layne. People ask me if we ever fly together and the answer is usually not. If we do travel together it's usually in the car and usually when we go home to Wisconsin:)

This weekend I'm planning on doing my taxes, cleaning the apartment and getting stuff done for the Y and our upcoming STARS visit:) Should hopefully be a productive weekend!

Hope Valentine's Day was full of friends, family and loved ones:) Mine sure was!

Oh, Minnesota

How I miss thee and your accents! I also miss a lot of the things they're talking about in "Shit people from Minnesota Say". Thankfully, I'll be back in Minnesota for a few days in February! I can't wait!

Emily's visit

Emily's visit was, by far, the best thing that has happened in 2012! She was here for 3.5 days and I loved every minute of it!

She's awesome!

Excellent week

Thus far, this week has been excellent!

Monday I subbed and worked at my after-school program. Chatted with my friend Jonathan as well
Tuesday I had coffee and a 3 hour chat with my friend Melanie who I haven't seen in forever. I also had a dinner date with my other friend Sam. Had awesome phone dates with Emily and Jake.
Wednesday (today) went to the Science Center with Jessi and the kids she nannies for! It's awesome to see a museum through the eyes of a three and one year old:) Both the boys are so sweet and Jessi is so wonderful to care for them with so much love and compassion. They're lucky to have her!

Tomorrow I'm hopefully subbing, running some errands and working at Old Navy. Same for Friday. I love having busy weeks, especially when they're productive!

CUUUUTE Video

This is the cutest video I have seen all week! Check it out here Baby sloths! I wonder if there's a whole show on Animal Planet devoted to sloths. That would be excellent!

Saturday, January 7, 2012

One of my best friends since forever is coming to Pittsburgh on Thursday!! I can't wait to see her!

In wedding news, our Save the Dates arrived on Friday. Man was that a struggle, but they finally arrived and we'll be sending them out by the end of the month. Emily agreed to help out when she's visiting this weekend which is lovely! Tomorrow, Jessi and I are going to a bridal show in Monroeville. It's the first one I've gone to and I just want to go to see what it's all about. I guess I'm looking for flower arrangements since we've got all the other major things done. Regardless, it should be fun!

New Year's Resolutions

1. Update my blog at least once a week
2. Exercise and eat healthy

To be continued:)

2012

Hooray! It's 2012! It's going to be a big year! We're getting married in July. My dear friend Meg is getting married in September. My brother and his girlfriend are having a baby in June so I'm going to be an auntie! It's going to be a banner year:)

We went to a NYE party last night and had a wonderful time! It was very relaxed and neither of us got super drunk, which is always good. Previous NYEs have been slightly disastrous; dear champagne, you and I will not be friends. Remember when it was cool to drink a whole bottle of bubbly by yourself? Yeah..... Regardless, this year we had a very classy NYE:)

Here's to a happy and healthy 2012!!!
